Owning your ATM is almost always the better route. With a free placement program, another company installs the machine at no upfront cost, but that’s where the upside ends. They keep the surcharge and pass you only a small percentage of it, if any at all. They control the surcharge amount and everything else about the machine, so you have no say in how it runs. And the machine is only as reliable as they make it: if they don’t keep it filled, it runs out of cash and stops earning, and if your location doesn’t hit their minimum transaction count, they can charge you a fee on top of it.
